The Cape Verdean opener came in the 32nd minute courtesy of Bebé, who delivered a stunning right-footed shot from outside the area after a direct free kick. The goal set the tone for Cape Verde’s dominance in the first half. However, a moment of VAR controversy arose in the 40th minute when a penalty awarded to Mozambique was overturned upon review.
Mozambique’s Geny Catamo posed a threat throughout the match, winning a penalty in the first half that was initially given but later ruled out by the video assistant referee. Despite their efforts, Mozambique struggled to break through Cape Verde’s solid defense.
As the teams went into the halftime break with Cape Verde leading 1-0, the island nation continued their attacking prowess in the second half. In the 51st minute, Ryan Mendes doubled Cape Verde’s advantage with a clinical right-footed shot inside the box.
Cape Verde didn’t stop there, as Kevin Pina added a third goal in the 69th minute, displaying precision with a right-footed shot from outside the box, assisted by Deroy Duarte.
The final whistle confirmed Cape Verde’s commanding 3-0 victory over Mozambique. Bebé’s opener in the 32nd minute, Ryan Mendes’ goal in the 51st minute, and Kevin Pina’s strike in the 69th minute sealed the deal for Cape Verde, securing their place in the last-16.
