Kabras Sugar RFC has cemented its status as a powerhouse in Kenyan rugby, culminating in their recent triumph as the undefeated champions of the 2023/24 Kenya Cup season. This victory marks their third consecutive title win, a feat accomplished by only a select few in the history of Kenyan rugby.

Since their promotion to the top-tier Kenya Cup league in the 2014/15 season, Kabras Sugar RFC has been a force to be reckoned with, qualifying for every edition of the Kenya Cup final. Their dominance on the field is evident in their record of three Kenya Cup victories in a row, adding to their total tally of four titles.

Under the astute leadership of South African coach Carlos Katywa, Kabras Sugar RFC has not only secured their place among the elite clubs in Kenyan rugby but has also surpassed expectations by defeating traditional powerhouses such as KCB Rugby in four consecutive encounters. With an impressive unbeaten streak of 26 matches and 28 consecutive wins, Kabras has set a formidable standard for excellence in Kenyan rugby.

One of the distinguishing features of Kabras Sugar RFC is their willingness to embrace diversity within their ranks. In 2016, they made history by fielding a roster with more than five foreign players, including four Fijians, a South African, and four Ugandans. This multicultural blend proved to be a catalyst for their maiden Kenya Cup victory, showcasing the club’s commitment to fostering talent from across the globe.

The strategic recruitment of international coaching talent has also played a pivotal role in Kabras Sugar RFC’s rise to prominence. The hiring of Australian Mike Bishop in the 2015/16 season marked a turning point for the club, as he led them to their first Kenya Cup triumph by defeating Impala Saracens. Successive appointments of South African coaches Henley du Plessis and Jerome Muller further solidified Kabras’ position at the top, culminating in their back-to-back Kenya Cup victories in the 2021/22 season.

In the current roster, Kabras Sugar RFC boasts three foreign legionnaires, each contributing to the team’s success in their own right. South African Ntabeni Dukisa emerged as the top try-scorer in the 2023/24 season, showcasing his prowess on the field. Fijian-born Kenyan Jone Kubu and Ugandan Asumani Mugerwa add depth and versatility to the squad, embodying the club’s commitment to harnessing talent from diverse backgrounds.

Off the field, Kabras Sugar RFC commands a devoted following that rivals even the most popular soccer clubs in Kenya. Their passionate fan base is a testament to the club’s enduring legacy and its ability to inspire pride and loyalty among supporters.

Kabras Sugar RFC’s remarkable journey to rugby supremacy in Kenya is a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence, diversity, and community. With their recent Kenya Cup triumph, they have solidified their status as a dominant force in Kenyan rugby and continue to set the standard for success both on and off the field.
