The Kenya Under 20 rugby team; Chipu, is gearing up for their journey to Scotland to compete in the World Rugby Junior Trophy 2024. This prestigious event will take place from July 2 to July 17 in Edinburgh, where Chipu will showcase their talent and prowess on an international stage.

    Road to the Tournament
Chipu earned their place in this global tournament by clinching the Rugby Africa Under 20 Barthes Cup Championship in April 2024. This victory not only solidified their status as champions of the continent but also demonstrated their readiness to face formidable opponents from around the world.

    Group Stage Challenges

Drawn into Pool B of the World Rugby Junior Trophy, Chipu faces an exciting and challenging lineup of matches. They kick off their campaign on July 2 against Uruguay, followed by a clash with Netherlands on July 7. The group stage concludes with a crucial encounter against the USA on July 12. Each match presents an opportunity for Chipu to exhibit their skills and determination as they aim to progress in the tournament.

    A Legacy of Participation
This year marks Chipu’s fourth appearance at the World Rugby Junior Trophy. Their previous participations include notable outings in 2009 (Nairobi), 2019 (Brazil), and 2023 (Nairobi). With each tournament, Chipu has gained invaluable experience and continues to raise the bar for junior rugby in Kenya.

    Stakes and Aspirations
The ultimate prize at stake in the World Rugby Junior Trophy is qualification for the 2025 World Rugby Junior Championship. Chipu understands the significance of this opportunity and is fully committed to achieving their best performance to secure a spot in next year’s prestigious championship.

    Meet the Squad:
The squad representing Kenya in the World Rugby Junior Trophy 2024 is a blend of talent and determination. Led by Head Coach Simon Jawichre and supported by Assistant Coaches Qondani Katywa and Kenny Andola, the team includes:
Darrel Oluoch, Ian Nyandusi, Bramwel Mate, Brian Shile, Geylord Ngasi, Hafidh Mohammed, Eugene Etali, Cleyn Okumbi, Andycole Omolo, Eddy Otieno, Iddo Kuta, Wycliffe Ogutu, Nathan Tsindoli, Willy Tino, Edmond Omondi, Patrick Wainaina, Benedict Muiruri, Faran Juma, Philip Okeyo, Alvin Khavoli, Brian Kiptoo, Dennis Ndayala, Kipchirchir Bett, Elvis Otete, Eugene Ojiambo, Jackson Siketi, Michael Wamalwa and James Olela

    Non-Travelling Reserves:
Jeremy Namiti, John Asega, Jeff Maina, and Rogers Omanyi will stand ready as non-travelling reserves, providing crucial backup and support to the main squad.

    Supporting Staff:
Behind every successful team is a dedicated support staff. Chipu’s management team includes Strength & Conditioning Coach Williams Motto, Team Manager Philip Wamae, Assistant Team Manager Wacera Githua, Team Doctor Aysha Omar, and Physiotherapist Samuel Ochieng. Together, they ensure that the team is physically and mentally prepared for the challenges ahead.
