Kenyan national rugby sevens team, Shujaa, orchestrated a remarkable comeback to secure their return to the top tier of the World Sevens Series with a resounding 33-15 victory over Germany in a pivotal match held in Madrid.

The stakes couldn’t have been higher for Shujaa, who found themselves relegated last season following a heartbreaking loss to Canada. Eager to reclaim their position among the elite after a season’s absence, the team entered the match with a fervent determination to prove their mettle on the world stage once again.

The encounter kicked off with a burst of energy as Germany seized an early advantage, with Chris Umeh expertly finding the left corner for a try within the first minute of play. However, Shujaa wasted no time in responding, as their indomitable skipper, Vincent Onyala, led the charge, bulldozing through the opposition’s defense to touch down for a try. With the conversion, Shujaa narrowed the score to 7-5, setting the stage for an exhilarating showdown.

Despite Shujaa’s valiant efforts, they faced a setback when Chrissant Ojwang was temporarily sidelined for a high tackle, leaving the team with a numerical disadvantage. Capitalizing on this opportunity, Germany surged ahead to take a 12-7 lead, sending a wave of apprehension through the Kenyan camp.

However, Shujaa refused to be daunted by adversity, and Ojwang, upon his return to the pitch, wasted no time in making amends for his temporary absence. With a display of sheer determination, he landed a crucial try that leveled the scores at 12-12 as the halftime whistle loomed.

As the second half commenced, Shujaa unleashed a relentless offensive onslaught, with John Okoth igniting the crowd’s fervor by slicing through Germany’s defense to score a pivotal try at the center post. With the conversion successfully executed, Shujaa surged into the lead with a scoreline of 19-12, sending ripples of excitement through their supporters.

Although Germany’s Maximillan Heid momentarily threatened Shujaa’s ascendancy with a well-timed try in the 10th minute of the second half, the resilient Kenyan side remained unfazed. With unwavering determination and unwavering resolve, George Ooro and Kevin Wekesa showcased their prowess by adding further tries to Shujaa’s tally, sealing their triumphant return to the top tier of the World Sevens Series in emphatic fashion.

As the final whistle resonated across the stadium, Shujaa’s players were engulfed in jubilation, their victory serving as a testament to their unwavering resilience, unyielding spirit, and unrelenting pursuit of excellence. With their triumphant return to the top echelons of international sevens rugby, Shujaa has once again affirmed their status as a force to be reckoned with on the global stage, inspiring a nation and leaving an indelible mark on the annals of sporting history.
