Kasarani Stadium is currently undergoing a sweeping transformation in preparation for the prestigious African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027. Jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania as part of the collaborative Pamoja project, AFCON 2027 holds immense significance for the region, promising to showcase the vibrant spirit of African football on a global stage.

The scope of renovations at Kasarani Stadium is extensive, encompassing various facets crucial for the modernization of the facility. From infrastructure upgrades to aesthetic enhancements, the ongoing works aim to elevate the stadium to international standards, ensuring an unparalleled experience for athletes, spectators, and officials alike.

Among the key renovations currently underway are:

Installation of New Stadium Seats: Outdated seating arrangements are being replaced with modern, ergonomic seats designed to enhance comfort and accommodate a larger audience.

Upgrading of the Playing Surface: The playing field is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul to meet FIFA standards, ensuring optimal conditions for competitive matches.

Installation of Floodlights: State-of-the-art floodlighting systems are being installed, boasting an illumination capacity of 2000 lux to facilitate evening matches and provide enhanced visibility for players and spectators.

Access Control Systems: Advanced access control mechanisms are being implemented to streamline entry and ensure efficient crowd management during events.

Installation of Lifts: In a bid to promote inclusivity and accessibility, lifts are being installed to facilitate the movement of individuals with disabilities and elderly spectators across different levels of the stadium.

Installation of Roof Canopy: A modern roof canopy is being erected to provide shelter from the elements, offering protection from sun and rain while enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the stadium.

Expansion of VIP Seating: VIP facilities are being expanded and upgraded to cater to dignitaries and special guests, offering premium amenities and unparalleled views of the action on the field.

Modernization of Changing Rooms: The infrastructure for players and officials is undergoing modernization, with upgraded amenities and facilities to meet the demands of professional athletes and enhance their overall experience.

The ambitious renovation project is slated for completion by December 2025, well in advance of AFCON 2027. Despite the current appearance of the stadium resembling a construction site, stakeholders remain confident in meeting the deadline and delivering a world-class venue for the tournament.

Pius Meto, the director general of Sports Kenya, reiterated the commitment to readiness for AFCON 2027, emphasizing that the refurbishment works are progressing according to plan. Despite the temporary disruptions caused by the ongoing renovations, Meto affirmed that Kasarani Stadium is perfectly on track to meet the target completion date, assuring stakeholders of a seamless and memorable experience during the tournament.

As the countdown to AFCON 2027 continues, anticipation mounts for the unveiling of a transformed Kasarani Stadium—a beacon of sporting excellence and a testament to the collective vision and commitment of Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania in hosting one of Africa’s most prestigious football events.
