In a tense encounter at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana held firm against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, securing a goalless draw that propelled them into the last 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The result proved crucial, eliminating the 2004 champions Tunisia from the competition.

Sphephelo Sithole emerged as a key figure for Bafana Bafana, providing one of the match’s defining moments with a powerful shot from outside the box. However, Tunisia’s goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said showcased his skills, making a crucial low save to deny Sithole’s attempt.

Hugo Broos’ strategic prowess was evident as his side secured the much-needed draw, setting the stage for a last-16 clash in San Pedro on Tuesday. The opponent from Group F will be revealed later this week, presenting an intriguing challenge for South Africa.

Tunisia, on the other hand, faced an unceremonious exit from the Afcon, unable to break the deadlock in a match that held their last-16 hopes.

The Carthage Eagles’ fate was sealed with the final whistle, leaving them outside the advancing teams.

The encounter had its share of tension, with both sides seeking the elusive breakthrough. Tunisia’s late opportunity, orchestrated by substitute Haythem Jouini’s header, proved to be the closest, but the ball sailed over from six yards. A successful conversion would have propelled Tunisia into the last 16 and ousted South Africa.

As the group stage concluded with Namibia and Mali also playing to a 0-0 draw, Bafana Bafana claimed the second spot in Group E.
