No Bias, Just Rules: Motsepe Defends CAF Decision in AFCON 2025 Saga

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the AFCON 2025 Final, emphasizing respect for due process and institutional independence amid the dispute involving Morocco and Senegal.

Speaking on the matter, Motsepe clarified that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is strictly guided by its statutes and those of FIFA.

“We are very clear we have to follow the CAF and FIFA statutes and regulations. We’ve given Senegal the money, $10 million. We’ve given them the money and we’ve given them the trophy.”

Despite the decision already being implemented in favor of Senegal, Motsepe confirmed that Morocco has formally lodged an appeal, which is currently under review through the appropriate judicial channels.

“Morocco is appealing. We are very clear in our position as far as CAF is concerned. Whatever decision is taken by CAF, we will respect that.”

Motsepe also underscored the importance of maintaining neutrality, especially given the sensitivity of the case and the independence of CAF’s judicial bodies.

“The advice that we’ve been given is that we may not express any opinions on whose case is right or whose case is not right… the independence of the judicial bodies.”

Addressing media reports suggesting he had taken sides, the CAF president firmly dismissed such claims, reiterating his role is not to influence outcomes but to uphold decisions.

“I was a bit surprised because the media said the CAF president supports a decision. I respect the decision. Whether I agree or disagree, whether I like it or not, it’s irrelevant. I respect it and I’ve got to implement it.”

Motsepe’s remarks reinforce CAF’s commitment to governance, transparency, and rule of law, signaling that the final outcome of the AFCON 2025 dispute will be determined strictly through established legal and regulatory frameworks, not personal or political influence.
