Kenya Police FC are set to face off against Egyptian giants Zamalek the White Knights in a high-stakes CAF Confederation Cup second-round knockout clash on Saturday, September 15. Kick-off is at 3 p.m. at Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi, with a spot in the group stage up for grabs.

Kenya Police is making a continental debut while Zamalek, the defending champions, are gunning for their third title. Police earned their place in this round by edging out Ethiopia Coffee SC with a 1-0 aggregate after a goalless draw at home and a crucial away win.

Zamalek, having skipped the preliminary rounds as the top-seeded champions, will be stepping into the fray with high expectations.

In team news, Zamalek has strengthened their CAF Champions League squad with several high-profile acquisitions. Notably, they have signed Swedish-born Palestinian striker Omar Faraj from AIK Sweden and Moroccan left-back Mahmoud Bentayg on loan from French Ligue 1 side Saint-Étienne. Additionally, the trio of Nasser Mahe, Ahmed Sayed “Zizo,” and Mohamed Shehata have returned from their international duties.

Elsewhere, Police coach Antony Kimani ‘Modo’ is brimming with confidence despite a few setbacks.

“We’ve prepared thoroughly, and the squad is in great shape overall, though we’re missing Brian and Owino due to injuries. We’re ready to challenge the defending champions,” he asserted.

Key players Patrick Matasi, Aboud Omar, and Kenneth Muguna, who were with Kenya’s national team in South Africa, as well as Charles Ouma and Toha Rashid with the South Sudanese squad, faced travel issues due to protests at JKIA. They’re expected to join the team today in time for the final preparations.

Team news sees veteran midfielder Kenneth Muguna still suspended, while first-choice defensive midfielder Brian Musa is sidelined with an ankle injury. Midfielder David Owino is also out with a long-term injury.

Despite these hurdles, Police FC are drawing inspiration from Gor Mahia’s memorable 4-2 victory over Zamalek in the 2019 CAF Confederation Cup group stage. The stage is set for an electrifying encounter as Kenya Police aim to make their mark against the continental heavyweights.
