Hosts Cote D’Ivoire kicked off the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a victorious start. Goals in both halves by Jean-Philippe Krasso and Saudi Arabia-based midfielder Seko Fofana proved sufficient for the Elephants to overcome their West African counterparts, Guinea Bissau, at the esteemed Stade Alassane Quattara in Abidjan. The 60,012 capacity stadium hosted 38,858 cheering fans, setting a record attendance.

Though not a sold-out match, the turnout was impressive, hinting at a growing interest in the tournament that is likely to increase as it progresses.

The Elephants made their intentions clear early on, with Seko Fofana scoring a beautiful goal just four minutes into the game, setting the record for the fastest AFCON opener since 1976. Fofana nearly added a second with a powerful shot that unfortunately hit the crossbar before halftime.

Guinea-Bissau had two promising opportunities in the first half, with Mama Balde missing a good chance and attempting a spectacular acrobatic move, but he couldn’t connect with the ball. Another chance was lost when Diomonde’s pass went astray, leaving Mama Balde through on goal, but he couldn’t find the target.

Despite Guinea-Bissau’s efforts, the Ivorians maintained control and went into halftime with a one-goal lead.

In the second half, Guinea-Bissau made substitutions and played with more possession, creating chances. However, their lack of conviction in front of goal and occasional recklessness, including long-range shots from Jose Correia, hampered their progress.

Just before the hour mark, substitute Jean-Philippe Krasso scored an acrobatic goal after a brilliant play by Jonathan Bamba, doubling the Elephants’ lead. Krasso’s precise finish ensured a confident victory for Cote d’Ivoire in their tournament opener.

The Elephants face a tougher challenge in their next Group A match against three-time champions Nigeria on Wednesday.
