A Thrilling Comeback Secures Last-16 Berth.
In a thrilling encounter at the Africa Cup of Nations finals, Cameroon showcased resilience and determination, fighting back with two goals in the closing stages to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over Gambia. The Indomitable Lions’ journey from the brink of elimination to advancement from Group C provided fans with an exhilarating spectacle.

    Wooh’s Stoppage-Time Heroics

Defender Christopher Wooh emerged as the hero, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner that not only secured victory but also propelled Cameroon to the second spot in the group standings, just behind Senegal. The goals scored allowed them to finish ahead of Guinea. Gambia, however, faced elimination after suffering a third successive loss, prompting their head coach, Tom Saintfiet, to resign minutes after the final whistle.

    Rollercoaster Second Half

The match’s intensity reached its peak in the second half, where all five goals were scored in an action-filled sequence. Cameroon, trailing 2-1 with only five minutes left, had to claw their way back against a spirited Gambia side that had dominated the first-half exchanges despite being 80 places below Cameroon in FIFA’s rankings.

    Gambia’s Dominance and Cameroon’s Resurgence.

Gambia’s first-half dominance was evident, showcasing their determination and ability to challenge their much-vaunted opponents. However, Cameroon came back strongly after the break, with Georges-Kevin Nkoudou rattling the crossbar in the 50th minute. The opening goal came six minutes later, courtesy of Karl Toko Ekambi, a member of the 2017 Cup of Nations-winning Cameroon side.

A Game of Twists and Turns

Despite Cameroon’s resurgence, Gambia managed to equalize in the 72nd minute with a clever volley from Ablie Jallow. The momentum continued for Gambia as substitute Ebrima Colley scored a powerful shot in the 85th minute, putting them in the lead. Cameroon faced the daunting task of scoring twice in the remaining time.

    Wooh’s Winner and Last-16 Prospects.

In a stunning conclusion, James Gomez’s own goal leveled the score, setting the stage for Christopher Wooh’s unforgettable winner. The victory earned Cameroon a spot in the last-16, where they are set to face Nigeria in Abidjan on Saturday at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny stadium.

    Other Group Stage Highlights

    Senegal’s Commanding Performance

In another Group C match, defending champions Senegal exhibited a commanding performance, beating Guinea 2-0 in Yamoussoukro. Abdoulaye Seck and Iliman Ndiaye scored second-half goals, securing Senegal’s top position in the group with nine points. Cameroon followed on four points, advancing to the last-16, while Guinea also progressed as one of the best third-placed team.

    Mauritania’s Historic Triumph.

In a surprising turn of events, Mauritania secured a historic place in the last-16 by defeating 2019 winners Algeria with a 1-0 victory. Yali Dellahi’s first-half goal w byas enough to eliminate Algeria from the tournament. Mauritania’s achievement marks a significant milestone in their continental finals history.

    Angola’s Group D Triumph.

In Group D, Angola finished on top with a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso. Mabululu’s first-half header and a stoppage-time finish from Zini secured their position. Angola will now face one of the best third-placed finishers in the last-16, while Burkina Faso will contend with the winner of Group E.
