In a breathtaking turn of events at the Africa Cup of Nations, Mohamed Bayo etched his name in the tournament’s history with an eighth-minute stoppage-time header, securing a 1-0 victory for Guinea over a 10-player Equatorial Guinea. The game, teetering on the brink of extra time, witnessed Bayo’s decisive goal, leaving Equatorial Guinea’s exhausted players in despair on the field.

As the clock approached the final moments of the match, Ibrahim Diakite’s precise cross found Bayo, who brilliantly broke the deadlock with a header inside the near post. Effectively the last play of the game, Bayo’s goal sent Guinea into wild celebrations and their opponents left deflated on the field.

Equatorial Guinea’s hopes suffered a severe blow in the 55th minute when defender Federico Bikoro was shown a straight red card for a forceful kick on Bayo during an attempted clearance. Reduced to 10 players, they fought valiantly to force the game into extra time.

The dramatic narrative continued when Equatorial Guinea was awarded a penalty after a VAR review. Omar Artan’s decision to award a spot-kick came after Sylla was deemed to have fouled Iban Salvador. Emilio Nsue, Equatorial Guinea’s top scorer in the tournament, stepped up for the crucial penalty in the 69th minute, only to see his effort strike the right post, keeping the score level.

In the end, it was Mohamed Bayo’s sublime header that sealed Guinea’s place in the quarter-finals. The late drama showcased the unpredictability and excitement that define the AFCON, leaving fans and players alike in awe of the beautiful game. Guinea’s journey in the tournament continues, and they await their next challenge in the quarter-finals, ready to face whichever team crosses their path at Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara, Abidjan
