In a gripping Africa Cup of Nations encounter, 10-man Egypt experienced a stunning upset against DR Congo, bowing out of the tournament after an intense 1-1 draw that culminated in an 8-7 victory for the Leopards in a penalty shootout. This dramatic turn of events played out at the Laurent Pokou Stadium in San-Pedro, leaving football enthusiasts marveling at the unpredictable nature of the beautiful game.

The pivotal moment occurred in the 37th minute when Meschak Elia, capitalizing on a swift throw-in, executed a decisive header that found the back of the net, granting DR Congo the lead. The synergy of a well-delivered throw-over from Wissa and Elia’s precise header highlighted the Leopards determination to leave their mark on the competition.

The Pharaohs responded just before the halftime whistle, as Mostafa Mohamed converted a penalty in the 45+1 minute. The penalty was awarded after Ahmed Hegazi was fouled in the air by Dylan Batubinsika. Mohamed’s clinical strike leveled the score, setting the stage for a tense battle.

The teams entered the break with the score at 1-1.

In the second half, opportunities were scarce, with Cedric Bakambu having a chance to connect with Elia’s well-placed cross after the winger’s escape down the right flank. However, Bakambu’s first-time finish narrowly missed the mark, eluding Hegazi’s attempts to intercept.

Chancel Mbemba’s subsequent attempt, heading Masuaku’s cross, sailed over the target. The Leopards relied on the quick reflexes of Lionel Mpasi when Hamdi Fathi’s clever flick set up Zizo for a powerful shot from a challenging angle.

The contest concluded with a 1-1 deadlock at regular time.

Extra time heightened the intensity, and the drama continued with Mohamed Hamdy receiving a second yellow card for a late challenge on Simon Banza in the 97th minute. Reduced to 10 men, Egyptian Pharaohs faced additional challenges in the quest to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.

As the match ended in a 1-1 deadlock, the fate of both teams was left to be determined by a penalty shootout.

Mostafa Mohamed of Egypt and Arthur Masuaku of DR Congo missed their penalties, adding to the suspense.Egypt’s matchday goalkeeper Gabaski, stepping in for the injured Mohamed El Shenawy, who suffered a dislocated shoulder in the last group-stage match, hit the crossbar during the shootout. However, it was DR Congo’s Lionel Mpasi who scored, securing an 8-7 victory in the shootout, propelling the Leopards into the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Leopards remarkable journey in the AFCON continues as they advance to the quarter-finals, where they are set to face Guinea at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on Friday.
