In a riveting showdown at Stade Laurent Pokou, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana delivered an unexpected blow to the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists, Morocco’s Atlas Lions, securing a 2-0 triumph and claiming a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

From the opening whistle, both teams displayed unwavering determination to showcase their prowess. Bafana Bafana initiated the proceedings with a robust attack, but Morocco’s full-back, Achraf Hakimi, swiftly penetrated their defense, setting the stage for an intense battle.

From the opening whistle, both teams displayed unwavering determination to showcase their prowess. Bafana Bafana initiated the proceedings with a robust attack, but Morocco’s full-back, Achraf Hakimi, swiftly penetrated their defense, setting the stage for an intense battle.

In opening 10 to 15 minutes, Morocco forced a corner, heightening the pressure on Bafana Bafana. However, the South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, adeptly diffused the threat.

Teboho Mokoena made a noteworthy attempt on goal, unleashing a powerful shot from outside the box, testing Atlas Lions’ goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Despite Percy Tau’s subsequent effort falling short, the stage was set for an intriguing encounter.

It was a barren draw at the breather, South Africa growing into the game & denying the world cup semi finalists space to see the back of the net.

In the 57th minute, Evidence Makgopa’s clinical finish, though subjected to a meticulous VAR check, opened the scoring for Bafana Bafana, paving the way for a surprising victory against the World Cup semi-finalists.

Achraf Hakimi had a golden chance to level the score when Mothobi Mvala handled Ayoub El Kaabi’s shot, resulting in a penalty in the 85th minute. However, Hakimi’s spot-kick rattled against the crossbar, leaving Morocco trailing.

In a late-game twist, Sofyan Amrabat received a red card for fouling Teboho Mokoena during stoppage time. A free-kick just outside the box became the canvas for Mokoena’s artistry, as he curled a classy shot past Bono, sealing the upset in style.

Bafana Bafana’s journey now propels them to a quarter-final clash against the unbeaten Cape Verde’s Blue Sharks on Saturday at 11 pm EAT. As they seek redemption from their recent quarter-final exit, South Africa aims to make a significant mark in the tournament’s later stages.
