The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has reached its penultimate stage, and as the dust settles after the semi-finals, South Africa and DR Congo gear up for a showdown in the third-place playoff. Both teams suffered heartbreak in their respective semi-final clashes, but they now have a chance to salvage pride and secure a podium finish at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Saturday.

    South Africa’s Quest for Redemption

South Africa’s journey to the third-place playoff has been filled with twists and turns. Despite a valiant effort against Nigeria in the semi-finals, Hugo Broos’s men fell short in a tense penalty shootout. Now, they must summon their remaining strength and determination to overcome the disappointment and put up a strong performance against DR Congo.

    Tactical Considerations for Bafana Bafana

Broos’s tactical acumen will be put to the test once again as he navigates his team through the final challenge of the tournament. With key players like Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau expected to play pivotal roles, South Africa will look to exploit any weaknesses in DR Congo’s defense and capitalize on scoring opportunities.

DR Congo’s Last Shot at Glory

Meanwhile, DR Congo finds themselves in familiar territory after suffering a narrow defeat to Ivory Coast in the semi-finals. Coach Desabre will be urging his players to leave it all on the pitch and end their AFCON campaign on a high note. With a history of success in the third-place playoff, the Leopards will be aiming to replicate past triumphs and clinch another bronze medal.

    Key Players and Potential Lineups

In what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter, both teams will rely on their star performers to deliver when it matters most. For South Africa, the likes of Zwane ,mokoena and Ronwen Williams will be crucial, while DR Congo will look to players such as Gael Kakuta and Chancel Mbemba for inspiration.

    Historical Head-to-Head:

In past encounters, South Africa has secured three wins against DR Congo’s one, indicating a slight advantage for the Bafana Bafana.

    South Africa Possible Starting Lineup:

    • Williams; Mudau, Xulu, Mvala, Modiba; Mokoena, Sithole; Morena, Zwane, Tau; Makgopa

    Congo DR Possible Starting Lineup:

    • M’Pasi; Kalulu, Mbemba, Inonga, Masuaku; Pickel, Moutoussamy; Elia, Bongonda, Wissa; Bakambu.
