In a dramatic showdown for third place at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in the Ivory Coast, South Africa emerged victorious over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in a penalty shootout, after a tense goalless draw at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium.

    Missed Opportunities and Defensive Resilience:

Throughout the match, both teams had opportunities to break the deadlock. Silas Katompa of DR Congo squandered two clear chances, while Simon Banza and substitute Fiston Mayele also failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities. South Africa’s goalkeeper Williams showcased his defensive prowess by thwarting several goal-scoring attempts, including a critical save from Katompa’s close-range effort. After the break, Banza rifled over a difficult volley, and Silas failed to hit the target after Williams made a rare error, dropping the ball inexplicably to Elia, whose cross caused havoc in the South African defense.

    Intensified Pressure

When the Leopards top-scorer Yoane Wissa was introduced in the 70th minute, the Congolese pressure intensified. Mbemba, got a volley horribly wrong when free in front of goal, adding to DR Congo’s frustration. While South Africa briefly threatened through Mihlali Miyambela, Fiston Mayele then failed to hit the target with the goal at his mercy in the 90th minute.

    Penalty Drama Ensues

South Africa clinched the third spot with a nerve-wracking penalty shootout win against DR Congo, with goalkeeper Ronwen Williams emerging as the hero by saving two crucial penalties. The shootout began with midfielder Teboho Mokoena hitting the post, but subsequent efforts from both teams were successful until DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba’s attempt was thwarted by Williams. Despite Meshack Elia’s subsequent penalty, Williams stood firm, securing South Africa’s victory.

    Historical Significance:

For South Africa, this victory marks their return to the AFCON podium since 2000 when they clinched third place by defeating Tunisia on penalties.
